Type “Lot 3 180mW 650nm Red High Power Burning Laser Diode” on ebay. Those laser if place without lews, to get a large spot of 13cm2, will get 20mW per cm2. The problem it that requeri some ability to connect eletronics and built a device in home, and require very good protection to the eyes to avoid injury (like get blind), since it’s a very powerfull diode .

HairMax is well builted, but some reviews said a earlie model, that use a single 45mW 650nm laser module and mirror to split it into 9 laser beams, had some beams with 4mW and othewr beams with 1mW. Aculas laser uses 20mW per laser spotm, so the aplication time is smaller, since deliver energy more fast.

If effectivew or not it’s still a doubt, since respectable doctor says yes, and other respectable doctors says no. But it’s overpriced YES! It’s just a case similar to a comb, with a circuit for timer (measure aplication time) a laser module and DC adaptor. You can buy 5mW 650nm laser modules on eBay for 2,40 dollars each one, and if you got 10 units you will have a good start, sice HairMax have only 4,5mW per square cm.

Hi jerryaltman ,
Are you saying handheld LC are ‘just’ overpriced or are you saying they are not effective therfore waste of money?
BTW I am using a hairmax LC every day for 15-30 mins (more than they say is required) – in your opinion is this a good idea? – is hairmax even a good product? I was thinking if it’s not as strong as bigger ‘walk in’ lasers I should be using it this much at least…
Any comment welcome! thanks

Correction: Those diodes if colimated it will burn even platic, BUT if the laser spot is used without lens and get a distance form skin to allow a spot get large as 13 squace centimeters, it will have almost 20mW per square centimeter, while HairMax have only 4,5mw per square centimeter.

So, We can create a home laser, but need heatsink to avoid diode to self burn. The price of hand laser devices is predatory,a marketing, since those 650mW laser used are cheap, and are no much diferent than many 5mW laser pinters that cost 6 dollars each. DVD laser diodes 250mW 650nm 3 units per 66 dollrs, this proves everthing…

Hand laser dewvices have abou 9 650nm spots with 4,5mW each one, sold by 400 to 520 dollars. A laser diode of 650nm 250mW, used in DVD recorders of 16x is selled on Ebay by 66 dollarsa with 3 units. Those diodes if colimated it will burn even platic, if if the laser spot is used without lens and get a distance form skin to allow a spot of 13 squace centimeters, it will have almost 20mW per square centimeter, while HairMax have only 4,5mw per square centimeter.
